CHAPTER SEVEN
A WALK LIKE THIS CAN seem like an eternity, even though it's only a few yards. I thought this kind of thing wasn't gonna happen anymore, but I guess I was mistaken. I stopped in front of the saloon and hollered for Guntherson to come out.
What seemed like minutes passed, though it was probably just seconds, and he came through the swinging doors.
He was a big, ugly man, dressed in dusty, well-worn black clothes, but his black leather holster and Pearl-handled .45 looked brand new. A really dedicated gunman always takes very good care of his weapon, since his life depends on it.
âI understand you were inquiring about me,â I said.
âYour name Foxworth?â he snarled.
âIt is.â
âThey tell me you used to be fast; faster than a rattlesnake, and twice as deadly.â
âYeah, I heard that too.â I was still unconcerned.
âI'm from Missouri. Folks from there have to see something for themselves before they believe it. You want to show me?â
âNot particularly.â
âWhat's the matter? You turn yellow in your old age?â
âNot at all. Just gotten a little smarter. I finally realized there's no purpose to that sort of thing.â
âI think you're yellow.â He was still taunting me.
âI really don't care what you think or do, but I would appreciate you doing something besides shooting your mouth off.â
He was fast, very fast, but I was a tad faster. He was lying in the street on his back, staring up at nothing. His hand was gripping his bright, shiny .45, and his thumb was still on the hammer.
A crowd suddenly appeared. âYou're Jubal Foxworth, ain't you?â someone asked.
I ignored the questions being thrown at me, and walked away from the dead man lying in the street.
When I reached the livery stable, Ruby came rushing out the door and flung herself into my arms. âOh, Jubal. I was so afraid I'd never see you again.â
âI'm here, and I'm okay. Let's go home.â Home. That sure did have a nice ring to it. âI ain't never had a place I could call home.â
âYou've got one now, and there's a pretty girl that goes with it,â Ruby said, then winked at me.
She slipped her arm in mine and we walked to where Bernie and the boys were waiting.
âI see you made it through that little trouble okay,â Bernie said.
âIâm here, ainât I?â
Rowdy walked over to us. âI heard that fellow Guntherson was faster than greased lightning.â
âHe was.â
âHowâd you beat him if he was so fast?â the youngest cowboy asked.
âKid, if you have to ask that, you wouldnât understand the answer. The only thing you need to know is donât become a gunfighter, âcause someday it might be you lying in the street staring at nothing,â
âLetâs head home. I think weâve all had enough excitement for a while,â Bernie said.
We got back to the ranch late in the day. The yellow glow from the setting sun was sneaking its light through the tree branches and causing odd-shaped shadows to fall all around.
âIsnât that a beautiful sight,â Ruby asked.
